The Route:

  • The official start of the West Highland Way is a granite obelisk in Douglas Street, Milngavie (NS 553 744). The path runs around a small car park to the rear of the shops, across a road, along a tarmac path for 100m, pass under a road into a tree-lined lane, which follows a disused railway.
  • Passing the Community Education Centre on your left, the Way leaves the route of the former railway and turns left and right to follow Allander Water.
  • Follow the way marked path, uphill through Drumclog Moor and enter Mugdock Wood.
  • Walk straight on to where the Way passes through a stone wall onto a minor road. A finger post indicates the direction to follow.
  • Cross the minor road heading to your left.  The continuation of the path is marked by a Way Marker on the verge on the left side of the road and large boulders on the right. This area goes by the name of The Khyber Pass.
  • Continue past Craigallian Loch on your right and then Carbeth Loch on your left. The Way meets the B821 shortly after passing the Carbeth Loch.
  • Refreshments and toilets are available in Blanefield, which is reached by turning right where the Way meets the B821. The village is 1.75km to the east of the route.
